Microchip Technology USB58x & USB59x USB3.1 Gen1 SmartHub Devices

Microchip Technology USB58x and USB59x USB3.1 Gen1 SmartHub Devices are 6 and 7-Port SuperSpeed USB 3.1 Gen1 SmartHub Controllers for USB Type-C™ applications. The USB58x and USB59x Controllers integrate a 2:1 multiplexer to support a reversible connection of USB Type-C™. The devices also support full-speed (FS) and low-speed (LS) USB signaling for coverage of all defined USB operating speeds. The SuperSpeed hubs operate in parallel with the USB 2.0 controller to ensure 5Gbps SuperSpeed data transfers are not affected by slower USB 2.0 traffic.

Hub Feature Controller, I/O Bridging, and FlexConnect-
The Hub Feature Controller (HFC) provides an internal USB device dedicated for use as a USB to I2C/UART/SPI/ GPIO interface. This allows external circuits or devices to be monitored, controlled, or configured via the USB interface. USB58/USB59's internal Hub Feature Controller (HFC) also enables I/O bridging and FlexConnect host port swapping and switching.

PortSplitting Technology-
Microchip USB58/USB59 devices also include Microchip’s PortSplitting technology. PortSplitting frees the designer to use each port as a USB 2.0 and USB 3.1 Gen1-only interface for internal connections of bridging devices such as USB-to-Ethernet or USB-based Wi-Fi® modules.

Billboard Support-
If a hub application requires power delivery, USB58/USB59's built-in Billboard support gives designers the option to offload the power delivery function from the controller onto the hub.

Features

  • USB Hub with six or seven USB 3.1 Gen1/USB 2.0 downstream ports
  • Integrated Hub Feature Controller (HFC) enabling I/O bridging and FlexConnect
  • I/O bridging: host communication to external peripherals
    • Allows the host to seamlessly interface to peripherals via I2C, SPI or GPIOs over USB
    • Integrated USB to I2C/SPI/GPIO endpoint support
    • Eliminates the need for additional bridging ICs and high-speed switches, thereby reducing BOM costs and provides a more robust data interface solution
  • FlexConnect: host port swapping and switching to a separate downstream device
    • Reversible upstream and downstream Port 1 roles on command
    • Simplifies the overall software requirements of the primary host, as class drivers and application software stay local to the Device-turned-Host
  • Integrated 2:1 MUXes for direct support of the new USB Type-C ports
  • Integrated Billboard class device for power delivery notification support
  • PortSplitting: USB downstream port can be split for custom applications using embedded USB 3.0 devices in parallel with USB 2.0 devices
  • Battery charging: USB-IF rev 1.2 support on downstream ports (DCP, CDP, SDP) including legacy Apple iOS, Blackberry®, China Charging and many others
  • Port bootstraps: predefined configuration of port settings (battery charging, non-removable, disable)
  • ProTouch2 configuration utility
    • Ability to program hub through either USB host, OTP or external SPI ROM
    • Includes manufacturing line programming and field update capabilities
  • Compatible with Microsoft Windows® 10, 8, 7, XP, Apple OS X® 10.4+, and Linux® hub drivers
  • Available in a 100-pin (12mm × 12mm) VQFN RoHS-compliant package
  • Industrial grade temperature support (-40°C to +85°C)
  • Automotive quality and PPAP support

Applications

  • Standalone USB hubs
  • Laptop docks
  • PC motherboards
  • PC monitor docks
  • Multi-function USB 3.1 Gen1 peripherals
