KEMET Inductors

KEMET Inductors feature magnetic cores that are broadly classified into ferrite and metal types. The ferrite cores feature a high μ value and high inductance. Metal magnetic powder cores offer excellent saturation magnetic flux density, making them well-suited to larger currents. KEMET Inductors are designed to fit an expansive range of applications.

Why Metal Composite?

To respond to the peak current generated during sudden load changes, it would be suitable to use a metal composite inductor because its core has gradual magnetic saturation characteristics.

Power supply ICs with modular switching elements, control circuits, or similar components are equipped with internal overcurrent protection circuits. Although the overcurrent setting values and detection methods may vary greatly, overcurrent protection circuits also must be considered when selecting an externally mounted power inductor. If there is insufficient leeway in the allowed current of a power inductor with respect to peak current, it may cause the overcurrent protection circuit to operate, stopping the output. As indicated by the DC superimposition characteristics graph (below), in situations where a flow of excessive peak current could occur, it would be suitable to use a metal composite inductor. Its core has gradual magnetic saturation characteristics, which will not cause sudden drops in inductance.

Leakage Flux

If the leakage flux from the power inductor is large, it could affect the surroundings and cause noise. Power inductors with magnetic shield structures are available as a measure to reduce leakage flux, so it is important to select the most appropriate product type for the application.

KEMET Inductors

To complete the KEMET inductor portfolio, KEMET also offers normal mode coils that can be used for phase compensation and boost converters in DC-DC converter applications and earth inductors used for ground wire noise suppression. Each series uses a different mix of materials in order to achieve high performance, depending on the design requirements.
