ams OSRAM LiDAR Systems

ams OSRAM Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) Systems in industry applications enable industrial automation, traffic control, and range finders. These devices use structured light, direct, and indirect time-of-flight to generate 3D depth maps for industrial automation and robotics applications. The direct time-of-flight involves emitting short laser pulses, detecting the reflections, and calculating object distance based on travel time. The depth maps enable machines to navigate safely and interact intelligently with the environment. These systems support a full portfolio of VCSELs and EELs, including high-power Nanostack lasers and BIDOS VCSELs for efficient, flexible, and high-performance LiDAR solutions. The BIDOS VCSEL technology delivers superior optical power and efficiency, setting standards for future LiDAR development.

Direct Time of Flight (dToF)

An infrared source emits narrow, high-power pulses within eye safety limits, and a time-gated detector calculates object distance based on return time. The resolution depends on pulse width, and different detectors (PIN, APD, and SPAD) are used to scan the illuminated field.

Indirect Time of Flight (iToF)

The system emits a continuous pulse train with a 50% duty cycle, diffused to illuminate the target uniformly. A specialized detector array measures phase shifts and delays with sub-pulse-width resolution to determine object distance precisely.

Structured Light

An infrared source projects a structured illumination pattern (like dots or stripes) into the environment, which is captured by a high-resolution camera with an IR bandpass filter. The captured image is then used to triangulate object depth with high precision using conventional imaging sensors.
