EV/HEV Battery Management System Applications

TDK Battery Management Systems (BMS) are critical in protecting not only the longevity of batteries in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid EVs, but also the overall safety and performance. TDK provides a comprehensive high-quality product portfolio designed to monitor and manage xEV battery system applications.

Soft Termination

TDK Soft Termination is a type of MLCC in which a conductive resin layer is provided between the Cu and Ni plating layer. In the terminal electrode of a regular MLCC, the Cu underlayer is plated with Ni and Sn. The resin layer absorbs stress accompanying expansion or shrinkage of the solder joints due to thermal shock or flex stress on the board and prevents cracking of the capacitor element. TDK's soft termination capacitors not only improve vibration resistance and withstand tumbling shock, but even more so prevent bending and thermal cycling.

Serial Design

TDK Serial Design is a type of MLCC with the highest safety, adopting dual safety designs for crack occurrence prevention and short circuit occurrence prevention. The conductive resin layers are inserted in the terminal electrodes, and the resin electrode layers absorb stress applied by flex or thermal expansion of the board to prevent crack occurrences. The internal electrodes then adopt a special structure, which is equivalent to a serial connection of two capacitors. This structure reduces the risk of short-circuiting if a crack occurs in the capacitor element. The TDK CEU series is also compliant with AEC-Q200 and can be used for automotive applications.

Flex Crack Countermeasure MLCCs

TDK offers special types of Multilayer Ceramic Chip Capacitor (MLCC) products with redundancy in design in order to avoid short-circuit failures and improve the reliability of equipment. When a crack occurs on the element of an MLCC due to PCB depaneling, screw fastening, or shock from vibration or a drop, it may lead to a short-circuit failure. Among failure modes, there are open-circuit failures and short-circuit failures. Short-circuit failures can even cause problems such as abnormal heat generation, smoking, or ignition of the MLCC. It is vital to take measures against them, particularly in equipment requiring reliability. TDK offers many different MLCC products for flex crack countermeasures.

Electric Vehicle - Safety

TDK Electric Vehicle Safety products include MLCCs, inductors, EMC components, and sensor systems designed to meet rigorous requirements for quality and long-term performance. CEU Automotive Soft Termination Capacitors

TDK CEU Serial Design MLCCs are used for the replacement of MLCCs connected in series on a DC power line. The capacitors feature a conductive resin terminal electrode for crack mitigation purposes and are used in applications exhibiting high mechanical and thermal stress. The resin termination layer is plated on the external terminations, which absorbs external mechanical stress and protects the capacitor's ceramic body. TDK CEU series capacitors are AEC-Q200 qualified.
